Chipping Sparrow

The "Chippy" is named for its song -- a trill or string of musical chips, varying from quite long to very brief.  It normally sings from a perch in a tree, often an evergreen.

Evergreens are also favorite nesting sites, although the birds may be found raising young in orchard trees, in dooryard vines and shrubbery, and occasionally even on the ground.
