Fish - Large Mouth Bass

Also Known As:
Black Bass
(Micropterus Salmoides)

Usually greenish with a horizontal line of blotches forming a strip along both sides.  The upper jaw reaches behind the eye.  The anterior portion of the dorsal fin has 9 spines.  The posterior portion of the dorsal fin as 12-13 rays.

Spawning occurs when the water reaches approx. 60 degrees (February to May).  Nests are usually in water about 3-8 feet deep and lay from 2,000 to 43,000 eggs which the male guards after they are deposited.  Eggs hatch in about 5-10 days and the fry feed on zooplankton & insect larvae.  The adults feed on other fish and large invertebrates (crawfish).  Large Mouth Bass can grow to 18 lbs and over 25 inches.
