Eastern Kingbird

Thoreau called this flycatcher a "lively bird," and wrote that its noisy twittering "stirs and keeps the air brisk."  The Eastern Kingbird is not only lively; it is fearless in defense of its territory.  It will attack any passing crow or hawk, flying at it from above, pecking at the victim and pulling out feathers; it may even land on the flying intruder.  No wonder it was given the Latin name -- Tyrannus tyrannus.

The Gray Kingbird is a slightly larger and paler bird of Florida and nearby coastal areas.  Its bill is large, and it has no band on its notched tail.
