A Little Bit Of Litter...

When does a little bit of litter become an eyesore, a dump or a landfill.  One of our neighbors recently told me she is seeing more trash on the streets in our neighborhood.  "Sometimes", she says, "I think it is what the trash people drop, but mostly it's from things thrown from cars (like the broken beer bottle I found on our curb) or snack packages found near the school bus stops."

She asked me to use the Shadow Lake website to talk about this growing problem.  "Please remind people to talk with their children (or others in their household) about littering.  I pick up a lot and throw it in the garbage cans, if its trash day. But the problem seems to be getting worse."

Why do people do what they do?  Is it because they don't care?  Are they simply lazy?  Is each of us a little bit to blame?  It's easier to throw litter on the ground for someone else to pick up, than it is to hold on to it until we can properly dispose of.  It angers me to see people who have so little respect for their fellow man (or woman) that they will do that.  So, I will sometimes go out of my way to pick up someone else's trash.  You should see the back of my car...  It's filled with bags of litter I have collected!

I'm just waiting until I spot an offender.  Won't they be surprised the day after... and find several bags of trash sitting in their car, on their front step, in their yard... whatever!  While that may not be the kosher thing to do, the mere thought of it is verrry satisfying!
