Mourning Dove

The Mourning Dove, also called Turtle Dove, is a bird common throughout much of North America. Its name comes from its drab, gray colors and sad song.  Its call, an ooooOOOOoooo, ooo oooo, is a soft cooing noise that some think sounds like an owl's whooo.  We call them īstealth dovesī in our yard. Many times you can look out, not see any birds, and then suddenly realize there are a bunch of mourning doves collecting fallen seeds in the grass

In the spring the doves pair off. The female lays two eggs in a clutch but may lay and hatch up to six clutches each year in some southern areas. Both male and female incubate the eggs and feed the young. The young are fed on "pigeon milk," a milk-like substance that is pre-digested food formed in the crop of the adult bird.
