 Skink

Skinks are lizards.  Like most lizards, these shiny creatures hibernate in soil in winter, court and mate in spring, and lay eggs that hatch in late summer or early fall.  Hatchlings look different from the adults -- so different that people once thought they were another species.  

Case in point: The Blue-tailed Skink is in fact merely the juvenile form of the Five-lined Skink.
